The Story of Château
TO NURTURE IS NATURE
Château was born from a deep love for nature and the joy of nurturing it. What began as a personal need for reliable, knowledgeable care for pets and plants has grown into a trusted service built on dedication, experience and a shared passion for nature.
In this letter, our founder shares the heart of Château – its values, purpose and the quiet commitment that underpins all that we do.
“Château was born from a deep love of nature and the joy of nurturing it, creating harmony between people, animals, and their surroundings.”
– Kristen van Staden
FOUNDER’S LETTER
As a child, my weekends and holidays were filled with adventures in nature. My sisters and I would queue for salami rolls while our Border and Rough Collies raced on secluded beaches. Later, we loved playing in the Keurbooms River with our Golden Retriever paddling alongside. However, it was the humblest of creatures that sparked my fascination with blending nature and pet husbandry – a goldfish from Clarendon Park’s Market Week.
This curiosity led me to pursue a Bachelor of Science, where I developed a keen interest in genetics and ecology, particularly symbiotic relationships between species. My final-year assignment on aquaponic farming, comparing chemical and organic potassium supplements, earned a distinction. My diverse portfolio includes ongoing work as a Research SCUBA Diver with organisations such as SAEON and Rhodes University’s Ichthyology Department. These connections keep me connected to academia, striving to protect our natural world while also nurturing it within my home and others’.
In my personal time, I have explored various aspects of pet and plant care. I have kept exotic reptiles such as crested geckos and snakes, bred a variety of fish species and created habitats including vivaria, aquascape aquaria, ponds and riparia. My garden and indoor plant collection includes native and topical species, from Yellowwood Trees and Stapelia to Calathea. I enjoy propagation and have been successful in establishing most species, including fruit trees and vegetables. Aquaponics became the pinnacle of my passion for fish and plant ecology – a tranquil space where ornamental fish and lush strawberries thrive to the gentle trickle of water.
“The natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest.”
– Sir David Attenborough
Rooted in Nature
Château Home and Pet Care was founded in my early twenties, driven by two key realisations: the need for reliable home and pet care while owners are away, and the limited availability of specialised pet products in South Africa. As Château grew, I selected experienced members from nature-orientated communities and partnered with leading companies to deliver high-quality services and breed-specific products.
Now, after a decade of supporting pet owners – including enthusiasts, collectors and breeders – Château is a trusted team of professionals. Our attention to detail is unmatched, with tailored care for pets with unique needs. From administering medication to a Biewer Terrier and planning hikes for a Springer Spaniel, to maintaining exact water parameters for Caridina shrimp, our expertise runs deep.
“It’s a series of small things that make a big difference.” “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
– Jane Goodall
PREPARATION & GROWTH
Our custodians are trained and equipped with a strong focus on prevention and preparedness. Every team member is certified in pet first aid, breed-specific behaviours, communication and high-quality home and garden management. The Château Handbook provides custodians with essential contact details – your pet’s veterinarian, home security providers, a trusted neighbour and even your preferred plumber – ensuring you can travel with peace of mind, even in areas without mobile reception.
Innovation is central to what we do. We collaborate with partners to deepen our understanding of animal behaviour and expand our product range. Our Knowledge Centre provides practical solutions such as removing calcified water stains from glass. By working with environmental scientists and veterinary experts, we aim to bring the science of pet care into homes. We are team who understands extraordinary companions because we are devoted pet owners ourselves.
“I believe that education is all about being excited about something. Seeing passion and enthusiasm helps push an educational message. Yeah, I’m a thrill seeker, but crikey, education’s the most important thing”
– STEVE IRWIN
OUR ROLE IN CONSERVATION
Our commitment to nature extends from nurturing it within homes to protecting local wildlife and their habitats. We host and participate in local events, from clearing invasive plant species in nature reserves to joining beach clean-ups.
We also draw on the diverse skills within our team and partnerships to support non-profit organisations. As individuals, our Custodians are deeply engaged in giving back – volunteering their time and care at sanctuaries and local animal shelters.
