Summer Pet Care Tips

South African summers, particularly in our coastal region, can be challenging for our beloved pets. Unlike humans, pets regulate their body temperature far less efficiently, making them especially vulnerable to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke during warm months. For all pet owners, maintaining a safe, comfortable, and consistent routine is key. Preparation is your best defence against the heat. The following seven tips will ensure your pets start the day cool and refreshed:

Adjusting Exercise Schedules

Strenuous activity should be avoided during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 am and 4 pm, so plan walks, runs, and outdoor play for the early morning or late evening. Hot asphalt and pavement may burn a dog’s paw pads, so remember this handy trick:
Check the surface with the back of your hand, if you can’t hold it there for seven seconds, it’s too hot for their paws.

Maximise Hydration Points

Provide multiple, fresh and readily available sources of fresh, cool water throughout the day. Place water bowls both inside and outside the house, ideally in shaded areas. For a constant supply of chilled water, consider using heavy ceramic or earthenware bowls, as they naturally keep the water cooler than plastic or metal.

Provide Shade & Ventilation

Ensure your pets have easy access to well-ventilated areas. If outdoors, a covered porch, a well-shaded tree, or a raised kennel is vital. If indoors, encourage them to rest on cooler floor surfaces, such as tiled areas.

Consider Cool Clothing

For brachycephalic breeds ( flat-face breeds such as pugs, bulldogs, persians etc. ) that struggle to pant efficiently, use cooling bandanas or vests that you can wet down, as they have proven to be highly effective. These are readily available at local pet stores.

Small Swimming Pools

Introduce a small, pet-safe swimming pool, whether a purposefully built one or a shallow, sturdy alternative designed specifically for animals. Water play provides immediate temperature regulation while also offering gentle, low-impact exercise that supports joint health and cardiovascular fitness. This is especially for dogs, breeds such as Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Shepherds, Spaniels, and Poodles, and for cats, shallow water trays or gentle running taps can encourage cooling without forcing interaction. Small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs enjoy cool ceramic tiles, frozen water bottles wrapped in damp cloths, or misted greens rather than immersion, while birds enjoy shallow bathing dishes refreshed throughout the day. Across multiple species, water activities offer valuable mental stimulation, reduce restlessness, and transform summer into a positive, engaging experience when used safely, hygienically, and under supervision.

Grooming

Effective grooming during summer plays a critical role in temperature regulation, skin health, and overall comfort for pets across all species. Regular brushing and grooming help to remove excess or dead undercoat fur, which acts as insulation. Never shave double-coated breeds, such as collies or shepherds, as their outer coat protects them from sunburn and helps regulate their temperature. Cats benefit greatly from regular brushing to reduce hairball formation and improve airflow to the skin, particularly for long-haired breeds. Reptiles, while not groomed in the traditional sense, require meticulous enclosure hygiene to prevent bacterial growth, shedding complications, and humidity imbalances that may lead to skin infections. Even horses and other farm animals benefit from seasonal coat management, fly control, and regular cleaning to reduce heat retention and irritation.

Frozen Enrichment

Prepare DIY frozen treats ( for example, low-sodium chicken broth frozen in an ice tray) as they occupy the pet’s mind, cool them down internally, and last longer than regular treats. Small mammals such as rabbits and guinea pigs respond well to frozen vegetables or herbs that are lightly misted and served partially thawed.

Ensure your pets stay safe, cool, and comfortable this scorchingly hot summer. By remaining vigilant for signs of discomfort or distress, you can significantly reduce the risks of heat stroke. With proactive planning and attentive care, summer can stay the season of fun, ensuring our pets are cool and content, even during the hottest days.
